When an anxious or intrusive thought appears, it can feel urgent and demanding. Instead of trying to force it away, try pausing and noticing it: “I’m having the thought that…”
Then gently redirect your attention to a more balanced and calming response: “This thought feels scary, but it is not a fact. I can take one small step and be present right now.”
You might also ground yourself by taking a slow breath, naming five things you can see, or focusing on a simple activity.
The goal is not to eliminate every difficult thought – it is to create a little space between the thought and your reaction.
