As a seasoned psychotherapist with more than 15 years of experience, Rostyslav Shemechko offers a wide range of services, and sometimes you ask how these different approaches work. Let’s start with Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
If someone is dealing with anxiety, cognitive therapy focuses on changing the patterns of thinking and beliefs that trigger it. Someone with social phobia may worsen their anxiety by negative self-talk such as “I’m boring everyone.”
The basis of cognitive therapy is that beliefs trigger thoughts, which then trigger feelings and produce behaviours.
Cognitive therapy strategies include rational ‘self-talk’, reality testing, attention training, cognitively challenging and cognitive restructuring. This involves monitoring your inner dialogue, challenging unhelpful fears and beliefs, and testing the validity of negative thoughts.
